5 Jun 2014

Nigel Wright OnexThe former chief of staff to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is reportedly set to return to Onex Corp after a three year hiatus.

Nigel Wright left Onex to become Harper’s top aide in 2011, but resigned in May last year after taking responsibility for writing a $C90,000 cheque to help Canadian senator Mike Duffy repay improperly claimed expenses, Bloomberg said.

It added that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have since said Wright will not face criminal charges over the matter.

Onex CEO Gerald Schwartz told Bloomberg, “We are very hopeful that very soon Nigel will be back at Onex.

“I think that he will, and I think he will in the very near future.”

He added that Wright would probably be based in the firm’s London office if he does return, to help continue a strategic push into Europe.

Earlier this year Onex easily beat the $4.5bn target for its fourth fund in a speedy fundraise which lasted just 10 months.

Onex Partners IV held a final close on $5.15bn, making it the largest vehicle ever raised by the Toronto-based firm.
