Third Rock Ventures hires two new entrepreneurs-in-residence

Life sciences-focused Third Rock Ventures has hired two new entrepreneurs-in-residence (EIRs) to provide input on new and existing portfolio companies.

Biotechnology veteran Mark Perry and cardiologist Uday Kumar, pictured, will work in the firm’s West Coast office in San Francisco.

Perry, a board member of Nvidia Corp and board chairman of Pathway Therapeutics, was president and CEO of Bayer Corp spin-out Aerovance between 2007 and 2011.

He previously spent a decade at Gilead sciences in roles including general counsel, CFO and executive vice president of operations, and earlier spent 13 years at law firm Cooley.

Kumar is the founder of iRhythm Technologies, a medical device company focused on developing cost-effective new devices and systems for cardiac rhythm monitoring.

He is also co-founder and board member of Sympara Medical, a company developing a new therapy for hypertension.

Third Rock partner Kevin Starr said, “We are pleased to welcome Mark and Uday to our growing team of industry leaders in our West Coast office.

“We continue to see exciting, transformational science in the Bay area, and with the help of the deep life sciences experience of Mark and Uday, we will have the expanded team resources to build promising companies with the potential to make a tremendous difference in the lives of patients.”

In October Third Rock and SV Life Sciences and led a $10m Series A financing to launch nervous system-related disease treatment provider Cibiem.
