US venture capital firm Polaris Partners has hired Gary Swart as a venture partner based in the company’s San Francisco office.
Swart will be responsible for expanding the firm’s existing portfolio in Silicon Valley and San Francisco, Polaris said.
He joins following a stint as chief executive at oDesk, an online platform that matches freelancers to computer-based work.
During Swart’s time at oDesk the firm grew to a level where $1bn worth of work was flowing through its platform before it merged with fellow job match up site Elance.
Swart was previously the vice president of worldwide sales for Intellibank. Before that, he worked as a business unit executive at IBM.
Polaris’ Dave Barrett said that the new recruit, “understands transformative models and disruptive technologies, how to identify them, how to innovate around them, and how to manage and scale them”.
