Sandell, who also heads up NEA’s technology investing practice, has been with the firm since 1996.
The NVCA said Sandell was assuming the chairmanship at a “pivotal time” for the wider venture capital ecosystem.
He said, “Venture capital has an exciting story to tell, and for more than 40 years the NVCA has been a dynamic and effective voice for our industry.
“I am honored to serve as chairman and to help build on that strong foundation.
“Under [CEO] Bobby Franklin’s leadership and in partnership with the many venture capitalists who are deeply committed to advancing the NVCA’s mission, I believe we can bring a new generation of tools and resources to assist in our advocacy efforts and, looking forward, position NVCA as the voice of the broader startup ecosystem.”
Sandell was preceded in the role by Mohr Davidow Ventures general partner Josh Green.
NVCA also appointed six new directors to its board, including Third Rock Ventures partner Alexis Borisy, Norwest Venture Partners managing partner Jeff Crowe and Warburg Pincus managing director Tim Curt.
