Guardian Life hires Aetna veteran LaTorre as CIO, Sorell to retire after 17 years in role

The $73.9bn-managing Guardian Life Insurance Company of America has hired veteran Aetna exec Jean LaTorre as its chief investment officer and executive vice president.

The move will see incumbent CIO Tom Sorell transition to retirement after 17 years in the role.

La Torre will be responsible for Guardian’s investment policy and strategy across private equity as well as public equity, fixed income and commercial real estate.

She joins the company after a nearly 30-year career at Aetna, where she was most recently CIO and corporate economist overseeing the management of over $40bn in diversified assets.

LaTorre also led the pensions business, economic analysis and chaired Aetna Capital Management, the company’s fully owned hedge fund.

Guardian CEO Deanna Mulligan said, “Jean is a finance leader with a strong track record in insurance, where she has developed investment strategies that support long-term business growth.

“She will be a key member of my leadership team, helping us continue to deliver competitive dividends and financial security for our policyholders.”

Guardian has about $667bn of life insurance policies in force, as well as $8.5bn of capital and an operating income of around $1.6bn.
