Prior to joining First Reserve in March 2010 Pietersen served as a senior vice president at C.P. Eaton Partners where he was focused on the placement of funds with institutional investors.
He has also served as an associate director in the Private Funds Group at UBS where he was responsible for private equity and infrastructure fundraising.
Last month First Reserve secured a $130m commitment for its latest flagship vehicle from Chinese property business Hainan Zhenghe Industrial Group.
Last year the Washington State Investment Board committed $400m to the fund, which is targeting $5bn.
