Berkshire Partners hires Staples president as advisory director

Boston-based investment firm Berkshire Partners has hired Michael Miles, the president of $25bn office products supplier Staples, as an advisory director.

Miles will be tasked with sourcing new investment ideas and working as an operating adviser to portfolio companies.

Prior to Staples, in which he was made COO in 2003 and president in 2006, Miles worked for PepsiCo and YUM Brands for ten years, ultimately as COO of Pizza Hut.

He began his career at Boston-based consultancy Bain & Co.

Bain Capital, the private equity firm set up by then Bain & Co employee Mitt Romney in 1984, took Staples private two years later.

Several private equity firms including Bain Capital are said to be considering taking the US office supply company private again according to a report by Fortune in September.

Last month Berkshire Partners agreed a growth equity investment in Canada-based retail grocer Farm Boy.
