Sequoia leads $12m investment in smart LED bulb company LIFX after hefty Kickstarter success

bulbVenture capital giant Sequoia has put down the majority of capital in a $12m Series A funding for wi-fi enabled LED bulb producer LIFX.

The partnership follows a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign which which reeled in more than $1.3m worth of pledges for the company in six days.

LIFX produces smart bulbs which work just like normal bulbs, except that they can be controlled via mobile device using a free, downloadable app.

Angel investors Guy King and Bevan Clark also participated in the round. Sequoia’s investment brings LIFX’s total funding to $16.6m and will be used by the company to make homes “smarter”.

Sequoia partner Omar Hamoui has joined the company’s board of directors.

He said that the “team has truly revolutionized the first consumer electronics device: the light bulb. As consumers adopt connected home technologies, the LIFX bulb will be a starting point because it’s easy to install and immediately useful on a daily basis.”
