PubNub secures $11m in Scale-led Series B

tablet computer PCPubNub has become the first real-time network to raise a Series B round after securing an $11m investment led by venture capital firm Scale Venture Partners.

Existing backers Relay Ventures and TiE Angels also participated in the round, which brought PubNub’s fundraising total to $15.5m.

The San Francisco-based company said it has experienced an increase of 200 times in its traffic volume over the past 18 months.

With traffic distributed across 11 datacenters worldwide, PubNub currently powers thousands of real-time apps and streams 3m messages per second to over 100m devices each month. Its customers include Rebtel, Viggle, GetTaxi, Humble Bundle, StageIT, Spreecast, Celly, Monotype and Class Dojo.

Scale partner Andy Vitus said, “We see a major market shift to real-time applications and PubNub is leading that advancement. The company is enabling their customers to rapidly develop and, more importantly, scale real-time applications.

“PubNub is an exciting addition to our portfolio and I look forward to working with Todd and his team, and seeing the modern apps that their customers bring to market.”

In July Scale led a $45m Series D financing round for enterprise-grade database maker DataStax.
