Charterhouse takes €300m slice of Italian cheesemaker Nuova Castelli

dairy-cheese_sqUK-headquartered private equity firm Charterhouse has reportedly spent €300m on a majority stake in Italian cheese company Nuova Castelli.

Former owner Dante Bigi will continue to hold a minority stake in the business according to Private Equity News, which cited a person familiar with the matter.

It said the company’s EBITDA is more than €30m a year.

Nuova Castelli makes speciality Italian cheeses including Grana Padano and Gorgonzola.

Charterhouse closed its last fund on €4bn in 2009, but has been struggling to deploy capital and last year told investors it was considering a 12-month investment period extension.

Investment period extensions are common for funds raised during the peak of the financial crisis in 2008 and 2009.
