Apartment List search engine seals $15m Matrix-led Series A round

apartment_real_estate_170sqMatrix Partners has led a $15m Series A financing round for apartment search engine Apartment List, the first time the business has taken outside capital.

More than 1.5 million people visit Apartment List each month according to the company, which attempts to curate high-quality listings and avoid scams.

Matrix general partner Dana Stalder said, “Millions of people want or need to re-locate to new apartments each month and yet before Apartment List there was not a legitimate, comprehensive and reliable solution online,.

“[CEO John Kobs] and his team have built a service that consumers love and is uniquely positioned to own the rentals market.

“This is a huge space with demonstrable demand.”

In September New York-based startup Urban Compass, a technology company which helps people search for apartments, raised a $20m Series A round from new and existing backers.

The round, which took the company’s fundraising total to $28m, was supported by Advance Publications, Founders Fund, Thrive Capital, .406 Ventures and Salesforce.com founder and CEO Marc Benioff.

Urban Compass said the funds will enable it to meet increasing customer demand and scale the business.
