Although financial details of the transaction were not disclosed Summer Street typically makes equity investments of between $15m and $30m in each portfolio company.
MTI provides courses in fields including welding, allied health and the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry.
The deal is the first for the firm since May’s recapitalisation of New England Orthotic & Prosthetic Systems through its second buyout fund.
Summer Street is more than three-quarters of the way to its $300m target for its third buyout fund, according to the most recent filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
The mid-August filing showed the firm had collected more than $228m from 34 investors since launching the fund in early 2011.
