European private equity firm Mercapital plans to open an office in Bogota within the next four months, becoming the first Spanish buy-out firm to set up shop in Colombia.
According to Spanish newspaper Cinco Dias, Javier Loizaga, the firm’s president, said Mercapital will target investments in healthcare and infrastructure, sectors which have the most positive outlook in the rapidly growing market.
The firm initially expanded into Latin America last September by opening a new office in Sao Paulo to invest in the expansion of Spanish companies in the region. It was also the first Spanish private equity firm to set up in Brazil.
