The venture investment arm of microchip and semiconductor giant Intel has backed fundraising rounds for a string of mobile communications applications companies across China, North America, and the UK.
The firm is to invest a total of $26m into six companies developing mobile software, hardware and applications, including solutions for smartphones, tablet computers and laptops.
“As more devices compute and connect to the Internet, it creates an opportunity to deliver new end-user capabilities by supporting the development of mobile infrastructure, applications, services and components for Intel architecture-based platforms,” said Arvind Sodhani, president of Intel Capital and vice president of Intel.
Based in Beijing, Borqs specialises in software integration for Google’s Android operating system, working with smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to enhance the system to meet their requirements, while Reading, UK-based VisionOSS provides service delivery and management for large organisations developing IP-PBX private telecoms networks.
Two Silicon Valley companies also received funding from the firm – CloudMade, which assists in the development of location-enabled applications and services, and InVisage Technologies, which has developed the world’s first commercial quantum dot-based material for image sensors. Known as QuantumFilm, the technology replaces silicon as the light capture material to enable high-resolution images from such handheld devices as camera phones and digital cameras
Intel was also involved in a $20m funding round for Kaltura, a New York company which has developed an open source online video platform, and a solo investment in SecureKey Technologies, a Toronto designer of security solutions for debit, credit and identity smartcards.
“These investments represent innovative companies that Intel is working with to help advance our mobile platform initiatives across smart device segments including handheld, tablet and notebook businesses,” said Intel senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher.
