European private equity firm Permira has hired former McKinsey & Co partner Mubasher Sheikh to lead its healthcare team.
Prior to joining Permira, Mubasher spent 11 years at McKinsey, including six as a partner, and most recently served as head of the Global Pharmaceutical R&D Practice, a role in which he also led McKinsey’s European Healthcare Private Equity and Principal Investing industry.
Mubasher originally qualified as a doctor from the University of London and worked as a transplant physician and lecturer at teaching hospitals in London and Cambridge.
As a former partner at McKinsey, Mubasher managed a client portfolio ranging from start-ups to large pharmaceutical companies, including over half of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical, biotech and medical devices companies.
He has undertaken over 80 projects over the last ten years and advised boards on strategy and improvement issues with a particular emphasis on improving growth, M&A and technology.
Mubasher replaces Sally Flanagan who has decided to step down from a full time role but remains with Permira on a part-time basis to work on selected investment opportunities.
Kurt Björklund, co-managing partner of Permira, said, “We are delighted to welcome Mubasher to the Permira team. He brings a deep industry knowledge and network which will be invaluable to the firm as we continue to strengthen our presence in the healthcare sector. We look forward to working with him on finding attractive investment opportunities for our funds.”
“We would also like to thank Sally for her contribution in setting up and developing our Global Healthcare team since 2008. Thanks to her efforts we have a strong team in place today and are well positioned to capture future opportunities in the sector.”
Permira returned to the healthcare space in 2010 after buying a majority stake in Ireland’s Creganna-Tactx Medical for €220m, marking the firm’s first investment in the sector in over ten years.
