Harvard Olympic ice hockey star named head of endowment’s private equity arm


Lane MacDonald HarvardHarvard’s $32.7bn endowment has made the university’s former ice hockey star Lane MacDonald managing director for its private equity investments.

MacDonald, who played for the US team in the 1988 Winter Olympics, returned to his alma mater in 2008 as senior vice president for private equity.

He was promoted to managing director for it public markets platform last year.

Prior to Harvard MacDonald spent eight years as general partner at Alta Communications, where he was also a member of its senior leadership team.

He previously helped manage large investment funds at JW Childs Associates and BancBoston Capital.

Harvard Management Company president and CEO Jane Mendillo said, “With the right leadership, this is an asset class that presents unique opportunities for attractive returns.

“I am confident that the experience Lane brings to his new position will enable HMC to focus its resources to deliver sustained excellence and market outperformance.”
