Quay Partners opens Boston office, adds an infra advisory team

1 Nov 2012

Quay Partners, the Australian private equity fund of funds and advisory firm founded by former Macquarie and Pantheon executives, has opened an office in Boston and added an infrastructure advisory team.

The firm – which now has offices in London, Boston, San Francisco and Sydney and over $1bn under management and advice – has hired Matthew McPhee, a former managing director at Royal Bank of Canada’s Infrastructure Investment Group, to lead its infrastructure initiative.

In Sydney the firm has appointed former Grant Thornton Australia manager John Zaknic as an investment manager, and in Europe it has taken on ex-Robeco fund of funds consultant Jean- Pierre Sweerts as an advisor with specialty expertise in clean energy infrastructure investments.

“We have seen steady growth in institutional investor demand in this asset class, attracted by its yield and liability matching characteristics,” said Quay Partners co-founder Stephen White.

“At the same time, the range of equity investment options on offer has also grown, adding new challenges for investors.

“There is an increased level of segmentation and specialisation across the asset class. Our team is well placed to assist in navigating this complex landscape, and we intend to establish close working relationships with a small number of clients in this specialty alternative asset class.”

The firm said it expects to announce further additions to the Quay Partners team in the near future.

The news follows Quay Partners’ recent announcement regarding changes to its ownership structure and expansion plans with further international appointments.

Former Pantheon CEO Richard Bowley and Geoff Norman, the former head of Pantheon Asia, in September increased their equity holdings in the firm and now own a controlling stake.

In addition to the July appointment of Jeffrey Reed to its office in San Francisco, Quay Partners also hired former Adams Street, Graphite and Pantheon executive Lucy Nicholls in its London office.

The firm also recently promoted Daniel Bowden to partner, who will remain focused on the Australian and Asian private equity market, which have historically formed the core component of Quay Partners’ business.
