corn_170.sq_Venture capital-backed agriculture data science business The Climate Corporation has been bought by Monsanto Company in a cash deal worth about $930m.

The business was backed by a string of early-stage investors including Index Ventures, First Round Capital, Glynn Capital Management, Felicis Ventures and Atomico Ventures.

In June last year those investors were joined by Founders Fund, which led a $50m financing round supported by Khosla Ventures, Google Ventures and New Enterprise Associates.

The company attempts to use agricultural analytics and risk management software to help companies combat the negative effects of climate change.

Founders Fund partner Peter Thiel, the Paypal co-founder and venture billionaire, said at the time of last year’s investment, “The Climate Corporation has developed a unique technology to tackle one of the world’s most important challenges.

“Climate variability poses a giant and growing risk to the world’s ability to feed itself and for farmers to survive.

“The company can develop a global business that will change how the world feeds itself.”
