TSG invests in handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff

23 Mar 2012

San Francisco private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners has bought a minority stake in handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff, marking the firm’s second foray into the women’s accessories market this year.

Minkoff launched a five-piece apparel line in 2001 and shot to fame after her “I love New York” t-shirt appeared on the Jay Leno show.

She began designing handbags four years later and is famed for her iconic ‘Morning After Bag’, worn by celebrities including Keira Knightley and Reese Witherspoon.

News of the deal follows TSG’s recent investment in fashion jewelry designer Alexis Bittar. The firm has also previously invested in Free Style USA, a maker of sports watches. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The firm has more than $2.7 bn of capital under management and is focused on the branded consumer sector. Investments include Smashbox, e.l.f. cosmetics, Perricone MD, Pureology, Smart Balance, vitaminwater and MuscleMilk.

In November 2011 the firm closed its sixth fund, TSG6, on $1.3bn.
