Rap Genius gets cash money from Andreessen Horowitz

4 Oct 2012

Silicon Valley venture capital heavyweight Andreessen Horowitz is investing $15m in Rap Genius, a website set up by three Yale University graduates that allows people to explain and interpret hip hop lyrics.

Rap Genius lets users listen to songs, read their lyrics, and click the lines that interest them for pop-up explanations of what the lyrics mean.

Dubbed “The hip-hop Wikipedia”, users can also highlight any line and explain it themselves, suggest changes to existing explanations, and put up their favourite new songs.

The website was founded in October 2009 by Tom Lehman, Mahbod Moghadam and Ilan Zechory, who met during their undergraduate years at Yale.

Marc Andreessen announced the news on the Rap Genius blog.
