Private equity buyers bid for L Capital-backed French fashion brands

MajeL Capital-backed French fashion brands Maje, Sandro and Claudie Pierlot have reportedly attracted bids from a string of fellow private equity firms.

Carlyle, KKR, PAI Partners and CVC Capital Partners have all made non-binding preliminary bids according to Reuters, which said they gave the businesses an enterprise value of more than €650m.

It said the deal could include a cash injection into parent company SMCP, which was created to hold the businesses in 2010 when L Capital and Florac picked up a 51 per cent equity stake.

Judith Milgrom and Evelyne Chetrite, the creators of the three brands, hold the remaining 49 per cent.

The brands aim to provide accessible luxury apparel across France, UK, Italy, Spain and Germany.

In December 2012 European private equity firm Silverfleet Capital acquired La Fée Maraboutée, a French wholesaler and retailer of women’s fashion, for €65m.

Company founder Jean-Pierre Braillard and its joint-CEOs are also making a significant investment alongside Silverfleet.
