Corporate venture capital firm Intel Capital has led a Series B funding of IT group Big Switch Networks, which has now raised more than $45m from investors including Goldman Sachs, Index Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Redpoint Ventures.
Big Switch Networks specialises in open software-defined networking (SDN), which supports a broad range of networking applications.
“Data center operators need programmable and cost effective merchant silicon-based networking architectures to meet their data center economic and operational objectives,” said Intel Capital managing director Bryan Wolf. “We’re looking for companies creating the most disruptive data centre solutions, and Big Switch Networks Open SDN product suite is a leading solution in data center network virtualisation.”
Intel Capital is focused on innovative technology start-ups and companies worldwide. Since 1991, the company has invested more than $10.8bn in over 1,276 companies in 54 countries, of which 201 have gone public on various exchanges and 317 were acquired or participated in a merger.
In 2012, Intel Capital put $352m in 150 investments with approximately 57 percent of funds invested outside North America.
