Former US vice president and climate change campaigner Al Gore has been named a partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Gore will be responsible for helping find and fund businesses with the potential to help solve the current climate crisis.
The appointment is part of a global collaboration agreement between KPCB and sustainability investment and research firm Generation Investment Management, which is chaired by Gore. Under the agreement, KPCB partner John Doerr will join Generation's advisory board, and KPCB will co-locate their European operations at Generation's offices in London.
KPCB's presence in Asia and the US, combined with Generation's presence in the US, Europe and Australia, is expected to support global scale solutions.
KPCB will continue to invest in start-up venture capital and Generation will continue to invest in global public equities. The two teams will collaborate on opportunities spanning sectors such as renewable energy technologies, building efficiency, cleaner fossil energy, sustainable agriculture and carbon markets.
Gore said, 'This alliance brings together world-class business talent to focus on solving the climate crisis. Together, we have a working understanding of this urgent, multi-dimensional challenge and are resolved to help business and government leaders accelerate the development of sustainable solutions.'
Gore also announced that as part of the agreement between the two firms, 100 per cent of his salary as a partner at KPCB will be donated directly to the Alliance for Climate Protection, the non-partisan foundation he chairs that focuses on accelerating policy solutions to the climate crisis.
Gore was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a climate change campaigner. His appointment is the latest high profile recruitment by KPCB, who appointed former US secretary of state Colin Powell as a strategic limited partner in 2005 to advise on leadership issues.
