Canadian firm PCP launches healthcare fund, hires former health minister20/08/2008. Source: AltAssets.
Canadian firm Persistence Capital Partners has established the PCP Healthcare Opportunities Fund, a fund focused on healthcare across Canada. Former Quebec health minister Dr Philippe Couillard has also joined PCP as a partner in the new fund.
Dr Sheldon Elman, managing partner of PCP, said, 'Healthcare spending in Canada reached over $160bn last year - almost 11 per cent of Canada's gross domestic product, yet only represents 0.52 per cent of the capital markets in Canada.
'As Canada's population ages, the pressure on the healthcare system and the associated challenges continue to increase. We believe that there is a need and an opportunity to develop and modernise the healthcare infrastructure, working in a complimentary fashion and in partnership with the provincial systems, which would be a potential solution to alleviate some of these challenges,' Dr Elman added.
PCP made its first investment in March 2008, when it acquired the three businesses of Medisys Health Group.
