US venture capital firms Tugboat Ventures, Greylock Partners and Madrone Capital Partners have backed the launch of search engine Cuil. In April of this year, Madrone led a $25m Series B financing round for the company. The Series A round raised $8m, and was led by Tugboat and Greylock.
Following the financing rounds Madrone general partner Greg Penner, Greylock venture partner Dave Strohm and Tugboat founding partner Dave Whorton have taken up positions on the Cuil board.
Menlo Park-based Cuil claims to have indexed 120 billion web pages, three times more than any other search engine. The company acknowledged early teething problems.
Cuil was co-founded by husband-and-wife team Tom Costello and Anna Patterson, along with Russell Power. Costello previously worked for IBM, while Patterson and Power were formerly at Google, where Patterson was the architect of Google search index, TeraGoogle.
Louis Monier, Cuil's vice president of products, was also at Google, where he led the design of a faceted search engine.
Costello said, 'The web continues to grow at a fantastic rate and other search engines are unable to keep up with it. Our significant breakthroughs in search technology have enabled us to index much more of the internet, placing nearly the entire web at the fingertips of every user.'
Greylock has over $2bn in capital under management. Portfolio companies include Facebook, Kickfire, digg and Apptio.
