Emerging markets private equity fundraising on course to beat 2007 totals, EMPEA30/07/2008. Source: AltAssets.
Emerging markets private equity fundraising could well beat 2007 totals, according to the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association. In the first half of 2008, 104 funds dedicated to investments in emerging markets raised $35.3bn in capital, which represents a 68 per cent increase over the $21bn raised during the same period in 2007. The 2007 total was $59.2bn. Sarah Alexander, president of EMPEA, said, 'Economic conditions in the US and Europe appear to be having less impact on fundraising for private equity in emerging markets compared to mature private equity markets.'
Much of the growth during the first half of 2008 was driven by a surge in funds raised for investment in Emerging Asia. Funds focused on the region accounted for 75 per cent of the capital raised in the first half of 2008, compared to a significant lower 55 per cent in H1 2007.
'Fundraising results for the first half of 2008 bode well for the industry but do not tell the whole story. Institutional investors weighing their future allocations will be looking closely to see how quickly and how well this growing pool of capital gets deployed. As the fund sizes continue to grow, investors need to see that these markets present sufficient opportunities to absorb this capital,' added Alexander.
