Shiraz Akmal and Jawad Ansari have established private equity firm GCube Ventures, based in Los Angeles, which will focus on the video game industry, initially targeting the US and Asian markets. Previously, Akmal was vice president of operations and product development at THQ, a developer, publisher and distributor of video games. Whilst there, he founded the company's external development group.
Akmal has also directed video games including Scooby-Doo!, The Incredibles and SpongeBob.
Ansari is the founder and former general partner of media and consumer-focused venture capital firm Miven Venture Partners. He is also the founder and former chairman and CEO of investment firm Corporate Metrix.
Akmal said, 'As the first venture capital firm focusing on the global video game industry, we intend to open new doors, help develop extraordinary ideas into world class businesses, and support much needed industry entrepreneurship and innovation. We believe the combination of our extensive domain knowledge; global co-investor network and industry relationships will fuel the rapid expansion of this market.'
Ansari added, 'We understand the industry from both perspectives - the entrepreneur's and the investors. Our firm will support the industry's growth by investing in its untapped potential throughout the entire game "ecosystem". The game industry is becoming the dominant form of entertainment and we are positioned to become the pre-eminent global videogame investment firm of choice.'
