Venture capital firms invest $158m in India in Q2 200814/07/2008. Source: AltAssets.
Venture capital firms invested $158m across 26 deals in India during the three months ending June 2008, down from the $182m (25 deals) in Q1 2008, according to a study by Venture Intelligence in partnership with the US-India Venture Capital Association. The amount was also down from the $163m invested in Q2 2007, although the number of deals was up by one from that quarter. The latest figures take venture investments during the first six months of 2008 to $340m across 51 investments, compared to $363m put into 55 deals in H1 2007 and $384m and 62 deals in H2 2007.
'VC investment activity as well as amounts invested during the first half of 2008 has not been affected much by the turmoil in the global financial markets,' said Arun Natarajan, founder and CEO of Venture Intelligence.
'While IT companies continue to account for a majority of investments, it is quite significant that the proportion of non-IT investments - both by activity and value - has now climbed up to 40 per cent. VC investments are increasingly focusing on alternative energy, media, retail and other consumer demand-led sectors,' Natarajan continued.
