Washington, DC-based private equity firm Global Environment Fund has appointed former Carlyle partner Jay Powell as a managing partner. Powell will be responsible for growth capital and private equity investments in North America.

As part of this role, Powell serves as a managing director with the firm's cleantech investment team.

Prior to joining GEF, Powell co-founded Severn Capital Partners, a private investment firm focused on specialty finance and opportunistic investments in industrial companies. From 1997 to 2005 he was a partner at Carlyle, where he headed the North American Industrial Buyout Group.

Before that, Powell was a managing director and served as head of the M&A group at Dillon, Read & Company, and was a managing director at Bankers Trust Company.

GEF was established in 1990. The firm has three investment teams focused on cleantech, emerging markets and international forestlands. It manages $1bn in private equity investments for institutional investors.
