Barcelona-based cleantech private equity firm SI Capital Partners has appointed renewable energy entrepreneur Guillermo Briones as chairman. Briones will take a minority stake in the fund management company. Briones founded Spanish wind power developer Terranova in 1991. The company merged with another Spanish wind developer, CESA, in 2005. The merged entity was bought by Spanish construction company Acciona for €1.4bn in 2006.
SI Capital manages the SI Capital R&S 1 fund. The fund, launched in Q1 2007 and seeded with €10m, has a target size of €80m.
SI Capital managing partner Sebastian Waldburg said, 'There is no one better qualified to guide our investment strategy and increase our deal flow than Guillermo Briones. This is an excellent appointment for us as we begin to increase investments and raise further funds.'
Briones added, 'This is an exciting opportunity for me. SI Capital is poised for great success in the Spanish market, which is one of the best markets for renewable power development in the world.'
To date, SI Capital R&S I has acquired minority stakes in Enerstar Solar Thermal Project, a development platform for solar thermo electric plants; Bernalia State Renovables, a biomass development platform; and Solynova Energia, a developer and operator of solar photovoltaic plants.
The fund focuses on development stage projects, operating stage projects and companies active in Spanish renewable energy, particularly wind, solar photovoltaic, solar thermo electric or concentrated solar power, bio-mass and small hydro-electricity.
