The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts has teamed up with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, to support a new Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI), NESTA announced at its largest innovation conference to date. The WSRI is a joint endeavour between the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT and the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton.
Sir Tim - speaking at the conference via an internet link - encouraged mangers to give innovative thinkers the space, time and money to do something outside their direct mandate.
Sir Bob Geldof, who really touched the audience with his enthusiastic speech, criticised the fear of failure among entrepreneurs in the UK and urged everyone to do more to encourage the young to be entrepreneurial.
NESTA also released a report at the conference, with the title 'Total Innovation', which looks at high technology sectors such as aerospace, pharmaceuticals and automotive, and argues that too many UK firms are unprepared for the ways in which international competitors are becoming more innovative.
NESTA CEO Jonathan Kestenbaum said, 'Never before has there been such an opportunity to bring so many innovative thinkers together in one place to take on the biggest social and economic challenges of our age. This historic conference and the ideas, networks and opportunities it produces may well provide the next set of answers to those challenges. That makes today's event truly unique.'
