Sir David Walker has published an initial Disclosure and Transparency in Private Equity consultation document. In it he lists ideas on how the private equity industry should tackle issues that have caused a heated public debate. Sir David has worked with an advisory group consisting of leading private equity professionals and is now seeking a wider debate based on the consultation document. The consultation period runs until 9 October. Sir David focuses on the larger end of the buy-out market, which has seen itself increasingly under fire by trade unions and a number of politicians. His review calls for more transparency in the industry. At a press conference Sir David emphasised that the industry needed to do much more to be better understood by the public. Often criticism is based on a lack of knowledge of how private equity works and how the various players make their money.
The British Venture Capital Association and a group of private equity firms asked Sir David in February 2007 to undertake a review of the adequacy of disclosure and transparency in the industry with a view to recommending guidelines.
