UK private equity firm Star Capital has acquired equity stakes in 25 operational private finance initiative projects (PFIs). The PFI assets in which the firm has acquired stakes, including debt and equity, have a value of more than £2bn.
‘The secondary market has very significant growth prospects because PFI is an increasing part of the Treasury’s infrastructure funding planning for the UK, and most Western governments have decided to adopt similar principles,’ said Tony Mallin, chief executive officer of Star Capital.
The equity that has been acquired by Star Capital has a value of over £120m. Mallin said the firm was planning to increase its portfolio to between £400m and £500m by buying additional stakes in PFI projects in the UK and Europe.
