US early stage technology specialist Vanguard Ventures has announced two new general partners. Hugh Y Reinhoff has joined the firm as a GP and Larry Schwerin has been promoted from partner.
Reinhoff will be responsible for building up the firm's biotech and healthcare investments. His appointment echoes a widespread trend among venture firms scaling up their exposure to one of the few vibrant sectors in an otherwise depressed industry.
Prior to joining Vanguard, Reinhoff spent more than 20 years in medicine, research, and venture capital. Most recently he was chairman, CEO, and founder of DNA Sciences, a genetics discovery company.
Schwerin has been a partner at Vanguard for the past year and has 20 years' experience as a technologist. He was general manager for Lucent Technologies' Wireless Broadband Networks Division, following 12 years of classic research and development work at Bell Laboratories.
Vanguard was founded in 1981 and specialises in seed and early stage technology. It has $500m under management, with offices in Palo Alto and Houston.
