Flagship Ventures, the US venture capital firm, has expanded its life sciences team with the appointment of Edmund ‘Ted' Pitcher, the founding partner and former chair of the patent and intellectual property group of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP, as a venture partner.
Pitcher will focus on venture creation and investment analysis, and will apply his expertise to intellectual property matters.
He brings over 25 years of experience of the venture capital and biotech industry, advising industry participants on intellectual property strategies and development. Before joining Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, he co-founded one of the largest firms specialising in intellectual property law in Boston.
‘I'm looking forward to contributing my experience in the strategic use of intellectual property as a value driver and in launching new ventures by combining emerging technologies in novel ways,' he said.
The Flagship life sciences team comprises 12 professionals based in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Alameda, California.
A stream of venture firms have been expanding their life sciences teams over the last 18 months to take advantage of the enduring institutional interest in the sector. Life sciences has remained one of the most active areas of venture investment in a market that has otherwise been, at best, lifeless.
