Institutional investment management firm Duff Capital Advisors has added two investment teams, focusing on the utilities and merchant power sectors, led by Vedula Murti, and financial services, led by Morid Kamshad. Murti will lead a team focusing on long and short investments within the utilities sector. The team will manage a concentrated, fundamental equity long/short strategy, focused primarily on the utilities and merchant power sectors, according to the firm.
Prior to DCA, Murti was a senior managing director and senior portfolio manager for the energy and utility equity long/short strategy at Tribeca Global Management. Marvin Caze, formerly an analyst at Tribeca, will join him in the new investment team.
Kamshad and investment team will seek to generate absolute returns through long and short investments across sub-sectors of financial services including banks and bank holding companies, thrift institutions, insurance companies, finance and mortgage companies, credit card issuers and other financial intermediaries and financial services companies.
Previously, he was the portfolio manager for the global financial services fund at Pequot Capital Management. He will be joined by Montserrat Farina, previously an investment banking associate at JPMorgan.
The firm has also made a number of senior hires, adding Andrew Wilder, Mike Khorrami, Charles Lerner, Laura Flynn and Maria Berenguer.
DCA founder and CEO Phil Duff said, 'We are methodically gaining critical mass by strategically seeking the highest calibre investment teams and experienced senior leaders, which will allow us to develop both stand alone and blended investment strategies.
'We will continue to expand our strategies to include additional skill-based, non-correlated investment strategies and are committed to providing our clients with customised solutions,' he added.
Wilder will take up the role of CFO. Previously, he was the COO and CFO of North Sound Capital, which he co-founded in 2001.
Khorrami joins as managing director, investment manager sourcing group. Prior to DCA, he was at Millennium Advisors, where he was responsible for business and performance oversight of the firm's credit and fixed income strategies.
Lerner has been appointed as chief compliance officer. Most recently, he was the chief compliance officer for Dillon Read Capital Management at UBS.
Flynn joins the firm as a managing director in the client advisory group. She was previously a vice president at Lehman Brothers.
Berenguer has been hired as a managing director in the global investment solutions group. Most recently, she was the managing director of Pension Solutions at AIG Investments.
DCA provides institutional investors, including pension funds, insurance companies, foundations, endowments and sovereign funds, with a range of investment strategies and advice and proprietary liability risk management and allocation tools and services.
The firm encompasses a broad array of strategies with an emphasis on non-correlated, alpha-generating alternative investments, including absolute return strategies, private equity and real assets.
The firm was launched in March of this year, with up to $500m of equity capital from New York private equity firm Lindsay Goldberg.
