PE firms line up as HSBC’s train leasing arm rolls onto the sales block

Private equity firms are expected to lead the way in a bidding war for HSBC’s £2bn (€2.3bn) train leasing business, according to reports. Through HSBC Rail, the bank owns about a third of UK rail rolling stock.

HarbourVest Global Private Equity, the listed arm of fund of funds HarbourVest Partners, is to target UK-focused investors with a move to list on London’s Specialist Fund Market. The firm, which is listed on NYSE Euronext in Amsterdam, plans to issue a secondary offering in London, selling shares held by existing shareholders to new investors.
